Crowned “Detroit’s Queen of the Blues” in 2015, Thornetta Davis, a multi-talented international singer/songwriter from Detroit, ia the winner of over 30 Detroit music awards. She first gained attention in 1987 when she became back up singer for the Detroit soul band “Lamont Zodiac and The Love Signs.” Shortly after, the lead singer left the band and the name changed to “The Chisel Brothers featuring Thornetta Davis.” In 1996, Thornetta recorded her first solo album “Sunday Morning Music” on the Seattle based label “Sub Pop” which received a rave revue in the national Entertainment Weekly magazine. Her song “Cry” from that album was featured on the HBO hit “The Sopranos”. Thornetta has opened for legendary blues and R&B greats such as Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells, Lonnie Brooks, Johnnie Johnson and many more…her history is extensive and her performances are memorable… and Noel Night would not be the same without her.

The Garden Theater

Afro Blue, was founded in the spring of 2002 by Connaitre Miller, Jazz Voice Coordinator at Howard University.
Singing music similar to the styles of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, The Manhattan Transfer, and Take 6, while adding their own unique sound, this dynamic “vocal big band” has performed to wide critical acclaim.
Afro Blue has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered; reached the top four on The Sing-Off, NBC-TV’s a cappella group competition; and joined the legendary Bobby McFerrin in selections from his Grammy-nominated VOCAbuLarieS album during the 2011 D.C.

HISTORY

The Detroit International Jazz Festival was founded in 1980 by Robert McCabe and the Detroit Renaissance.
Along with the Detroit Grand Prix and the International Freedom Festival, the Festival was intended to bring people into the city and to provide all segments of the population with world-class entertainment. From 1980 to 1991, the Festival flourished through a partnership with the highly regarded international jazz festival in Montreux, Switzerland.
In 1991, the Festival merged with Detroit’s Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, where it resided until September 2005.In March 2005, Detroit philanthropist and Mack Avenue Records Chairman Gretchen Valade emerged as a major sponsor of the Festival.
With additional support from the Knight Foundation, the Festival expanded in all aspects.
Its new footprint, covering three blocks, provided two additional stages and more space for food vendors and other activities.

Looking to attract new audiences to jazz and the Festival, in 2011, jazz musician Chris Collins was appointed as artistic director and has since taken on the role of president of the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation.
With Collins’ vision and the support of the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation Board of Directors – led by Chair Gretchen Valade – the Foundation has continued to integrate new and exciting artistic elements and opportunities into the signature event, in addition to year-round programming.

The Detroit Jazz Festival is now managed and produced by the Detroit International Jazz Festival Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 2006.
Through the generosity of Detroit philanthropist and Mack Avenue Records Chairman Gretchen Valade, the Foundation also established a significant endowment to support Festival operations.
The staff and advisory committee continuously work to raise the balance of operating costs through corporate partnerships, contributions and earned-income opportunities.

For nearly 40 years, the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation has celebrated Detroit’s rich history of jazz music by providing year-round concerts and educational programming, and of course, organizing the world’s largest free jazz festival over Labor Day weekend.

- Detroit Jazz Festival - Logo Image -

With the support of corporate sponsors, philanthropic organizations, individual donors and volunteers, the Detroit Jazz Festival is free to music fans looking to revel in the artistry and improvisation of jazz legends, rising stars, legacy and homecoming artists.
Each year’s lineup of more than 60 performances spanning multiple stages, as well as spontaneous late-night jam sessions, offers something for everyone.

History of Labor Day Festival,
Hamtramck

37 years of fun

Hamtramck City Festival was first proposed in 1980.

The Dodge Main factory had just closed.

Then-Mayor Robert Kozaren, with the help of a group of dedicated citizens, conceived having a huge city festival that would  boost the spirits of the residents, and show  that Hamtramck  could smile in the face of a crisis.

The first festival was planned for late September.

From the start it was a huge success, with over 100,00 people attending.
People from across the area came to the festival
to enjoy the music, food, crafts and all manner of fun.

The festival was moved up to Labor Day to take advantage of the better weather and longer holiday weekend.

Hamtramck History

Founded in the wake of the American Revolution, Hamtramck remained largely unknown for more than 100 years as a dusty farming community on the edge of Detroit, Michigan.
In 1910, the town took a new direction with the opening of John and Horace Dodge’s auto factory.
By 1930, it had a population of 56,000 –
one of the most densely populated cities in the United States.

Polish immigrants made up the majority of this  population.
After centuries of repression by the Russians, Prussians, Austrians, and Germans, the Polish immigrants hungered for democracy. .
By 1922,  Hamtramck  incorporated as a city, the Poles were the controlling influence,
Even as the sounds of heavy industry faded,  Hamtramck maintained its persona as an immigrant community.
these days Arabs, Bangladeshis, Bosnians, Serbians, find the city an attractive place to settle.
